- Tetrachloroethylene,
also known under its systematic name tetra chloroethene and as
perchloroethylene, perchloroethene, perc, and PCE, is a
chlorocarbon with the formula Cl2C=CCl2.
- It is a colourless
liquid widely used for dry cleaning of fabrics, hence it is sometimes
called "dry-cleaning fluid."
- Perchloroethylene
(PCE) is produced domestically by three processes.
- Two of the processes
involve the chlorination and oxychlorination of ethylene dichloride
(EDC) or other chlorinated hydrocarbons having two carbon
atoms.
- Perchloroethylene
and TCE are manufactured separately or as coproducts by the chlorination
oroxychlorination process with the raw material ratios determining the
proportions of PCE and TCE.
- The effects of tetra
chloro ethylene on human health come from cases of accidental or
occupational exposures.
- High exposures
primarily affect the central nervous system although liver and kidney
effects have also been reported.
- Longer-term
exposures to tetrachloroethylene have been reported to produce
dizziness, headache, nausea and fatigue.
- Epidemiological
studies of workers in the dry-cleaning and laundry industry are
inadequate to assess the carcinogenicity of tetrachloroethylene in
humans.
- NETSB , strives to
increase the use of new environmental pollution prevention technology by
small business, resulting in measurable environmental and economic
benefits.
- A continuous soil
column experiment was conducted to investigate reductive de chlorination
of trichloroethylene (TCE) in soil system reductively manipulated by
three types of reductants (Fe(II), dithionite, and Fe(II) + dithionite
(combined treatment of Fe(II) and dithionite)).
- The feasibility of
micro-sized oil emulsion was investigated to remove trichloroethylene
(TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE), which are
representative dense
non-aqueous phase liquids, from soil and groundwater.
- Micro-sized emulsion
can remove DNAPLs due to its large surface area and
hydrophobicity.
- Most
tetrachloroethylene is consumed as a solvent used in dry
cleaning.
- It is also used to
degrease metal parts in the automotive and other metalworking
industries.
- It appears in a few
consumer products including paint strippers and spot
removers.
